Robin

Hi, I'm Robin.

I enjoy stitching things together.

Most days that's software.

Sometimes it's designers, developers and product managers.

And in my free time it's fabrics and thread.

Portrait of Robin van Gestel

Hey, welcome to this introduction site. I am Robin, 27 years old, from the Netherlands. I'd like to introduce you to what makes me tick. In addition to my CV, I hope this website offers a broader insight into who I am as a person and potential colleague. So take a look around — and I'd like to hear from you!

How I got here

Psychology & Technology

I am a technical person, but I am not a hardcore coder. I wanted to understand the math and engineering behind software, but more importantly I wanted to understand how the software we all use daily impacts our lives. And how we can shape software to be easy to use and have benefits for everyone using it. That's why I chose to study Psychology & Technology at Eindhoven University of Technology, where these interests were brought together.

The First Project

In corona times my grandmother started suffering from dementia. She was forgetting what appointments she had. I decided to create a web app that showed her her calendar in very simplified terms. The calendar could be updated from a computer outside her appartment. The fact that I created a working app that really benefitted my grandma, brought me so much joy.

My first software project, made for my grandmother.

Growing into a Senior Developer

After this project, I started working in the software industry. I gained a lot of experience in building software for different clients. Starting out with front-end development. I later expanded into back-end development and cloud architecture.

Becoming a Co-Founder

In 2024, I co-founded a startup called BrandBlocks. This felt as a real exciting challenge where I could expand my professional and entrepreneurial skills alongside my technical skills.

BrandBlocks — the startup I co-founded.

Now

Unfortunately, the concept of BrandBlocks was caught up by the changing landscape of the software industry. So now I am looking for new challenges and opportunities to grow.

This is me!

My core traits that shape how I work and learn.

  • Creativity

Creativity is in my blood, I practice it in coming up with software solutions and in my creative hobbies. I also have a lot of experience in working with creative professionals (designers, brand strategists, animators, etc.)

  • Curiosity

If I would had to describe myself in one word, it would be curiosity. I am always asking 'why' and 'tell me more' to understand the world around me. I have taught myself many skills I use on the daily and if I cannot teach myself, I look for sources or courses to help me learn.

  • Ability to connect

My social skills are strong when compared to typical developers. I am able to connect with people from different backgrounds and I am able to understand their needs and perspectives. I am also able to communicate my ideas and solutions in a way that is easy to understand for everyone.
